Testing and developing your vocabulary builds your brain, especially if you push yourself against the clock. Also, developing your vocabulary improves your enjoyment of reading as well contributing to your speaking skills.

The words and definitions used here are drawn from the WordNet database. There will be two drop down menus which will allow you to restrict the selected words to particular parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) or to restrict the words selected to be drawn from one of several standard lists:

  • Basic 3000, a list of approximately 3,000 common English words;
  • College Test, a list of approximately 1,200 words occurring on standard college entrance tests such as the SAT or GRE.
To assist you in building up your vocabulary, after each of your responses besides telling you whether you were correct, the system will display this button:
Clicking that button will display a popup with the complete dictionary entry for the current word or phrase.
